In spite of the beauty of the locale, the Sugar Creek Watershed—in scenic northeastern Ohio—was labeled as Ohio’s second most degraded watershed in 1998 by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA). The agency found excessive nitrogen and phosphorus loadings as well as high stream sedimentation from soil erosion, riparian habitat destruction, and other pollutants. Located within the Sugar Creek Watershed is the small town of Winesburg, Ohio, home to the Alpine Cheese Company. While the company served as one of the many tourist attractions within Winesburg and fueled the local economy, it was also a key generator of excess nutrients found within the area’s streams and waterways..

“Who We Are and What We Eat: The Role of Metabolomics and Nutrigenomics in Creating Healthier Foods and Healthier Lives” is set for April 16-17. The event is being hosted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
